I heard a guy play an octave root (I think) as an eighth note burp. You could play that octave against any of the notes in the walk on that particular chord.

I don't know man? Maybe for a beginner this is a difficult bass line? I never even actually sat down & "Learned" it. It's one of those songs you've heard it so many times, if you've been playing for a while, you have a good idea of what's being played. I think this bass line is also a great exercise for practicing.

DUDE!!!! Get your winds tight to the top of the tuner post!!! When they slip to the top as time goes on and the string tightens properly the tuning will change. Especially bad during a gig to go out of tune. The more and bigger the gaps in the wind on the post to more out of tune it can go.

With all due respect sir, I am a guitar player who switched over to bass because I have more fun slapping a bass... Also. If you press your thumb and pointer finger together at a 90 degree angle, you can replicate a guitar pick and pull off pinch harmonics on a bass when you want it and not just all the time. You're still the Guru of bass brother! Much love.

Great interview. Growing up, I listened to more music than I watched TV, and I was fortunate to have older people in my life who could tip me off to a lot of different music. It's hard to believe that instrumental music, including jazz fusion were commonly used as music in commercials, even sometimes on radio playlists, something like Billy Preston's "Space Race" was in the Top 100, at least in the Tri-State area between Philly and NYC. Because jazz fusion often had R&B and funk influences, it was often heard alongside dance tracks as well. As Scott mentions, the bass players in a lot of these bands were groove monsters, too.

I lay my pinky over typically 3 strings at a time and still use forefinger and middle. I just float the whole hand.
